What is Fish Local?

Fish Local is an online marketplace for the retail and wholesale purchase of freshly caught fish.

What fish do you sell?

Each region of New Zealand will sell different products, depending on the species caught in that region. While you are likely to find common species such as Kingfish and Flounder right across the country, you’ll also find some species specific to certain regions.

Is it whole fish or can I buy it filleted?

That’s up to each fisher. Some may choose to only sell whole fish. Others will choose to fillet it on the boat. Expect to pay a bit more if they’ve processed it for you.

How does the fish get to me?

Again, that’s up to the fisher. Most will will ask for you to collect it from the wharf where they land it. Some will be able deliver it straight to you (additional delivery fees may apply).

I thought fishers weren’t allowed to sell direct from the boat?

Most of the fish you see listed on Fish Local is being sold using what’s called Wharf Sale legislation. This allows fishers to sell small quantities of fish direct to consumers. They must keep a record of who they sold it to, how much they sold and where they sold it. They can also only sell to a specific person once in a 24-hour period, hence we need a name for the purchase.

I want to buy more but the system won’t let me?

This is probably a result of the wharf sale limits. For finfish they can only sell a maximum of 10 kg greenweight (whole fish). For shellfish it’s 6 kg. For Rock Lobster, 3 kg. If the fish you’re trying to buy has been processed then the amount you can buy will be less than this 10 kg limit.
The other reason may be the limit of how much fish is actually available!

I’m buying for a restaurant. Can I buy more than is listed?

Our marketplace automatically limits how much you can purchase to stay within wharf sale legislation limits. However, some fishers will be a Licenced Fish Receiver (LFR) and so will be able to sell more. This will be evident when you try and increase the quantity purchased.

Can I get notified if my favourite fisher posts something or a fish I like gets listed?

Yes! If you create an account with us you can subscribe to your favourite fisher or fish. Every time there’s a new listing you’ll get an email with a link to go straight through to that listing.

Why was my credit card billed a different amount than what I thought I purchased?

At the point of placing an order our payment system makes an authorization on your credit card for 20% more than what you ordered. When the fisher processes and prepares your order they will enter an exact weight. This may be a little more or less than what you ordered, depending on the fish state, for example whole fish, or the amount available. The final payment is based on this exact weight so may be a little more or less than your initial order.

What if I have a problem with the fish I bought?

We encourage you to talk to the fisher first. They will all give you contact details as part of the sale. If you’re still not happy, feel free to reach out to us using the ‘Contact Us’ link above.
